Savoring the Season: Embracing Holiday Traditions with a Sweet Twist
This article is part of a sponsored campaign in collaboration with the California Milk Processor Board and Latina Mom Bloggers. As always, all opinions expressed here are entirely my own, reflecting my genuine experience and excitement for the holiday season.
The Joyful Frenzy of the Holiday Season
For many of us, the holiday season kicks off in a delightful whirlwind of activity as soon as the crisp autumn air arrives. In my home, the festive preparations are a cherished ritual that begins almost immediately after we respectfully dismantle our Dia de Los Muertos altar. It’s a swift transition, moving from solemn remembrance to joyous anticipation, as our kitchen begins to transform into a bustling hub. We meticulously clear out precious counter space and reorganize pantry shelves, making room for the essential ingredients that will bring our Thanksgiving dinner to life. Simultaneously, our living room, usually a tranquil space, starts to get cleared and prepped for the grandeur of our Christmas tree, a beacon of festive cheer that signals the heart of the holidays.
The Annual Shopping Scramble: A Guilty Pleasure?
Ah, holiday shopping. Just uttering those words can send shivers down one’s spine or evoke a knowing chuckle. Let’s not even delve too deeply into the topic, as I confess with a sheepish grin that I am *that* person. The one who, despite grand promises to myself every year, finds herself scrambling through crowded malls on December 23rd. You’ll spot me, a determined figure, elbow-deep in cluttered store shelves and frantically sifting through racks, desperately searching for those last-minute, perfect gifts. It’s a tradition, albeit a slightly chaotic one, that I vow to break every year. Yet, there’s a strange, almost exhilarating challenge to it – a guilty pleasure, perhaps – to conquer all my holiday shopping in a single, frenzied day. Crazy? Absolutely, but it’s a part of my holiday narrative now, a testament to the spirited madness of the season.
The Culinary Core: Crafting Unforgettable Holiday Feasts
Amidst the joyful chaos and the last-minute dashes, there’s one area where I truly shine, an aspect of the holidays that I prepare for with meticulous care and boundless enthusiasm: the dessert table. Priorities, right? While others might be stressing over turkey basting techniques or the perfect gravy consistency, my focus shifts firmly to the sweet grand finale. The desserts, for me, are not just an afterthought; they are the culinary heart of our Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings, the sweet punctuation marks that leave a lasting impression and gather everyone around for shared moments of delight.
Prioritizing Sweet Delights: Why Desserts Rule the Roost
There’s something magical about a beautifully crafted dessert. It’s more than just a sweet treat; it’s an edible expression of love, tradition, and celebration. Each year, I embark on a delightful culinary quest to ensure our holiday dessert menu is not just good, but exceptional. With traditional flans often taking center stage as one or two of our featured desserts, I dedicate ample time to testing out various recipes in advance. This ensures that come feast day, I have a creation that not only pleases every palate but also manages to outshine the delicious offerings from the previous year. It’s a self-imposed, yet utterly enjoyable, challenge to continuously elevate our sweet traditions.
The Timeless Allure of Flan: A Holiday Dessert Staple
Flan, with its silky-smooth texture, rich custard base, and shimmering caramel topping, holds a special place in many hearts, particularly during festive celebrations. Its elegant appearance and comforting flavor make it an ideal choice for holiday gatherings, evoking a sense of tradition and home. While classic flan is always a crowd-pleaser, I love to experiment with subtle twists that introduce new dimensions of flavor while still honoring its timeless appeal. This year, I’m thrilled to share a recipe that combines the beloved essence of flan with a delightful fruit infusion, promising to be both familiar and wonderfully novel.

Recipe Details
- Yields: 8 servings
- Prep time: 25 minutes
- Cook time: Approximately 1 hour 25 minutes
- Chill time: Overnight (essential for best results)
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
- 1 tablespoon water (for caramel)
- 3 ripe bananas, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 5 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 3/4 cups whole milk
- 1 small banana, thinly sliced for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare your oven: Preheat your oven to a steady 350°F (175°C). This ensures the flan bakes evenly from the start.
- Craft the caramel: In a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water over medium-low heat. Allow the sugar to dissolve completely, stirring gently initially if needed. Once dissolved, increase the heat slightly to medium. Boil without stirring. Instead of stirring, gently swirl the pan by holding the handle with both hands, allowing the sugar mixture to cook evenly. Watch closely as the syrup transforms into a rich, amber-colored caramel. This process usually takes about 8 minutes. Be very careful not to let it burn, as burnt caramel will taste bitter.
- Coat the flan mold: As soon as the caramel reaches the desired amber hue, immediately and carefully pour it into a 9-inch round baking dish or flan mold. Using oven mitts, carefully tilt and rotate the mold to ensure the hot caramel evenly coats the entire bottom surface. Set the mold aside to allow the caramel to cool and harden slightly.
- Blend the banana mixture: Place the roughly chopped ripe bananas, the entire can of sweetened condensed milk, and the vanilla extract into a blender. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and free of any banana lumps. This will be the sweet, aromatic base for your custard.
- Combine custard ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, gently whisk together the lightly beaten eggs and the 1 3/4 cups of whole milk. Once combined, slowly pour in the banana-condensed milk mixture from the blender. Whisk thoroughly until all the ingredients are very well combined and the mixture is smooth.
- Prepare for baking: Carefully pour the prepared custard mixture into the flan mold, directly over the hardened caramel layer. Cover the mold lightly with aluminum foil; this helps prevent the top from browning too quickly and maintains moisture.
- Set up the water bath (Bain-Marie): Place the foil-covered flan mold inside a larger baking pan. Carefully fill the larger baking pan with boiling water until the water comes about halfway up the sides of the flan mold. This water bath (bain-marie) creates a gentle, moist cooking environment, ensuring the flan bakes evenly and develops its characteristic creamy texture.
- Bake the flan: Carefully transfer the entire setup (large baking pan with water bath and flan mold) to the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until the flan is set. You can test for doneness by inserting a thin knife or wooden skewer into the center; it should come out clean.
- Cool and chill: Once baked, carefully remove the large baking pan from the oven. Leave the flan mold in the water bath until the water is cool enough to handle. Then, carefully remove the flan mold from the water bath and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack at room temperature. Once cooled, transfer the flan (still in its mold) to the refrigerator and chill overnight. This crucial step allows the flan to fully set and the caramel to liquefy into a delicious sauce.
- Unmold and serve: The next day, when ready to serve, run a small, thin knife carefully around the edge of the flan to loosen it from the mold. Place a serving plate upside down over the top of the flan mold. Firmly invert the mold and plate together. Gently shake the mold a few times to encourage the flan to release. Lift the mold, and your beautiful banana flan, glistening with caramel sauce, should slide out onto the plate. Garnish with thinly sliced banana rounds, if desired, before serving. Enjoy this delightful and unique holiday dessert!
