IFBC: Championing Mizkan

Portland, Oregon, a city synonymous with innovation and culinary excellence, has masterfully redefined the urban dining landscape. Renowned for its unparalleled array of food carts and an incredibly vibrant food scene, Portland isn’t just a city that eats; it’s a city that has revolutionized how America perceives street food, steadily earning its title as a premier destination for gastronomic adventures. For a passionate food blogger, there could be no better introduction to this extraordinary city than attending a pivotal food blogger conference, offering the perfect opportunity to simultaneously immerse myself in the local culinary culture, savoring every delicious moment at every turn.

An Inspiring Culinary Immersion: The International Food Bloggers Conference (IFBC)

Last month, an incredible opportunity arose to attend The International Food Bloggers Conference (IFBC), meticulously organized by Foodista. This experience was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mizkan, a brand committed to culinary excellence, alongside their esteemed family of products: Nakano Rice Vinegars, Holland House Cooking Wines, and World Harbors Marinades. The IFBC serves as a vital nexus for the food blogging community, creating a dynamic environment where digital content creators can connect directly with leading brands, discover fresh ideas for compelling content, and significantly enhance their technical expertise.

The conference curriculum was thoughtfully designed to cover a broad spectrum of essential skills, from mastering the nuances of search engine optimization (SEO) for food blogs to crafting engaging recipe writing and innovative recipe development. Crucially, it also delved deep into the artistic and technical aspects of food photography and styling, empowering bloggers to present their culinary creations in the most appetizing light. Beyond the educational sessions, IFBC fostered an invaluable sense of community, connecting like-minded bloggers who share an unwavering passion for food, writing, and photography.

Highlights from an Unforgettable Journey

My inaugural visit to Portland was nothing short of spectacular, blending the enriching experience of the conference with the vibrant exploration of the city’s unique charm. From inspiring educational sessions to delectable culinary discoveries and forging new, meaningful connections, here are some of the most memorable moments:

Displaying my appreciation for the incredible support, I proudly showcased my Holland House wallpaper. It was a subtle yet clear way of expressing immense gratitude to Mizkan for sponsoring my attendance at IFBC, a gesture that spoke volumes without overwhelming anyone.

Capturing this iconic shot of the Portland, Oregon sign was a highlight. The city unfolded before me under a beautifully clear sky, making my brief exploration via public transportation an absolute joy. Even if time was limited, every moment spent discovering Portland felt truly special.

The butchering demonstration was an unexpected artistic revelation. Watching the skilled artisan at work was akin to observing a master painter, each cut precise and purposeful. It was a powerful reminder of the deep skill and dedication inherent in culinary craftsmanship.

My first visit to the legendary Stumptown Coffee Roasters was an experience I savored. From the rich aroma to the perfectly brewed cup, every sip was a moment of pure delight, embodying Portland’s renowned coffee culture.

Mastering Digital Visibility: SEO for Food Blogs

One of the most impactful sessions at IFBC was led by Rand Fishkin, the visionary CEO & Founder of SEOmoz.org (now Moz). His presentation on SEO for recipe and food blogs was a masterclass in digital strategy, focusing on the optimal ways to tag blog content and enhance its discoverability in search engine results. Rand delved into critical aspects beyond mere tagging, covering keyword research, content structure, metadata optimization, and how to create truly valuable content that resonates with both readers and search algorithms. Understanding these principles is absolutely crucial for any food blogger aiming to grow their audience and share their passion effectively. For those interested in a deeper dive, Rand’s insightful presentation is available on SlideShare here.

A Culinary Delight at Parish Restaurant

The conference provided ample opportunities for networking and experiencing Portland’s fine dining. An exceptional evening was spent at Parish Restaurant, where we indulged in an amazing dinner featuring veal and grilled peaches. This dish, though deceptively simple in its description, was an exquisite symphony of flavors, highlighting the restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients and masterful preparation. It was a testament to how culinary artistry can elevate straightforward elements into an unforgettable dining experience.

The Art and Science of Food Photography

Perhaps the most entertaining and enlightening sessions were dedicated to the visual storytelling aspect of food blogging. We were treated to an incredible session on food photography with the esteemed New York Times’ food photographer, Andrew Scrivani, followed by a captivating Live Cooking Demo with Chef John, known for his engaging video recipe production on Allrecipes.com and his popular blog, Food Wishes. This dynamic duo shared invaluable insights into capturing the perfect photograph of any dish, revealing simple and inexpensive techniques and insider photography secrets. They emphasized the importance of natural light, thoughtful composition, and minimal styling to make food truly shine on camera. Their wonderful chemistry and practical advice made these sessions not only educational but also incredibly inspiring, equipping bloggers with the tools to significantly enhance their visual content and tell more compelling food stories.

The Enduring Impact: Inspiration and Confidence

There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from attending a conference and walking away not just informed, but genuinely fulfilled, deeply inspired, and brimming with newfound confidence. The International Food Bloggers Conference 2012 in Portland delivered precisely this feeling, session after enriching session. It wasn’t merely about gathering information; it was about transforming perspectives, sparking creativity, and solidifying the belief in my ability to cook with passion, write with clarity, and tell a captivating story through the lens of food photography.

This transformative learning adventure would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of Mizkan, who graciously sponsored my attendance. Their commitment to supporting the food blogging community and fostering culinary education is truly commendable. From the bottom of my heart, I extend my deepest gratitude to Mizkan for this unforgettable experience and the invaluable opportunities it presented.
