Unveiling the Roots of Our Food: A Journey to Lundberg Family Farms

For me, the most rewarding aspect of blogging is the unparalleled opportunity to step directly onto the farms where our food begins its incredible journey. There’s a profound satisfaction in witnessing the entire process, from a tiny seed in the soil to the delicious meal gracing my dinner table. This immersive experience transforms me into an unapologetic food enthusiast, eager to absorb every detail, every scent, and every story behind the ingredients we cherish.

Last month, I was exceptionally fortunate to be part of an exclusive group of food bloggers invited to visit the esteemed Lundberg Family Farms. You’ve likely encountered their diverse and high-quality products on grocery store shelves, ranging from versatile quinoa to delightful rice cakes (including the irresistible chocolate-covered varieties!), crispy rice chips, and an impressive array of rice types. What truly sets Lundberg Family Farms apart, and what I deeply appreciate, is their unwavering commitment to producing USDA Organic, Non-GMO, and sustainably grown products. These certifications aren’t just labels; they represent a philosophy of respect for the land and a dedication to consumer health that resonates deeply with conscious eaters everywhere.

A Legacy Rooted in Richvale: The Lundberg Story

Our enlightening tour commenced in the quaint, historic town of Richvale, California. Nestled in Northern California, near Chico, this area became the chosen home for Albert and Frances Lundberg. They embarked on a remarkable journey from Nebraska during the tumultuous era of the Great Depression, seeking new opportunities and fertile ground. In 1937, Albert and Frances, accompanied by their four pioneering sons—Harlan, Wendell, Homer, and Eldon—established their roots in Richvale. They recognized the unique conditions of the land as ideal for cultivating the highest quality rice products. More importantly, they committed to doing so in a sustainable manner, a groundbreaking approach they have meticulously practiced and perfected for over 75 years.

Today, the enduring legacy of Albert and Frances is proudly carried forward by the third and fourth generations of the Lundberg family. Their operations are still guided by the profound mission articulated by Albert Lundberg himself: “Leave the land better than you found it.” This isn’t merely a catchphrase; it’s a deeply ingrained principle that influences every decision, every planting, and every harvest at Lundberg Family Farms. It speaks to a long-term vision, ensuring that the fertile lands of Richvale will continue to provide for generations to come, all while preserving and enhancing the natural ecosystem.

Exploring the Heart of Richvale and the Rice Fields

Our journey into the Lundberg legacy deepened with a walking tour of Richvale, personally guided by Grant Lundberg, the esteemed CEO of Lundberg Family Farms. As we strolled through the quiet streets, literally walking in the middle of a 12-square block area, we absorbed the rich tapestry of Lundberg history woven into the very fabric of this tiny town, home to a population of just 277 residents. Each corner seemed to tell a story, reflecting the humble beginnings and the steadfast growth of a family dedicated to their craft and their community. It was a powerful reminder of how a single family’s vision could transform a landscape and build a sustainable enterprise.

The highlight for many of us was the unparalleled opportunity to experience a live rice harvest. On this particular day, Lundberg Farms was busy harvesting their exquisite Koshihikari rice, widely renowned as premium sushi rice. The sky above was an expansive, brilliant blue, mirroring the clear commitment of the Lundberg family. As we approached the fields, a rich, earthy aroma, delicately mingled with a nut-like sweetness, enveloped us. The smell was absolutely divine, a natural perfume that spoke of wholesome goodness and the bounty of the earth. I felt an overwhelming urge to immerse myself fully in this once-in-a-lifetime moment, eager to get my hands dirty and truly connect with the agricultural process.

From Combine to Dryer: The Harvest Up Close

Feeling like a true farmer, filled with anticipation and a touch of awe, I eagerly climbed aboard a towering combine harvester. This was more than just observing; it was an active participation, a chance to experience the rice harvest season firsthand. Eric Lundberg and Lance Benson, the dedicated grower services manager, expertly guided us through the vast fields, demonstrating the intricate dance between man and machine that brings in the precious grain. From the expansive fields, our journey continued to the massive rice dryers, crucial infrastructure in the post-harvest process.

The rice dryers themselves are monumental structures, giant bins designed to carefully store the newly harvested rice. Their primary function is to systematically reduce the moisture content in each batch over an extended period. This meticulous drying process is paramount for preserving the quality, flavor, and shelf-life of the rice. Each bin is equipped with advanced monitoring systems, ensuring that the drying parameters are precisely controlled. Operators vigilantly track the moisture levels, adjusting conditions as needed until the optimal moisture content is achieved. This critical step prevents spoilage and prepares the rice for further processing, embodying Lundberg’s commitment to delivering only the finest quality products.

Beyond the Fields: Nursery, Production, and Innovation

Our comprehensive tour extended far beyond the vibrant rice fields and the impressive drying facilities. We also had the privilege of stepping inside the Lundberg nursery, where the next generation of rice plants begins its life. Witnessing the tender care and scientific precision applied to the young seedlings provided a deeper understanding of the foundational efforts that go into every grain. From the nursery, we moved on to the bustling production facilities. Here, raw rice transforms into the various Lundberg products we know and love, meticulously cleaned, sorted, and packaged with efficiency and adherence to the highest standards of food safety.

Perhaps equally inspiring were the Lundberg offices. These aren’t just typical corporate spaces; they are a testament to the family’s holistic approach to sustainability and innovation. The offices were thoughtfully planned and constructed with remarkable efficiency, primarily utilizing recycled materials and maximizing the integration of natural light. This design philosophy not only reduces their environmental footprint but also creates a vibrant, healthy, and productive workspace. The result is a design that is both aesthetically beautiful and supremely functional, reflecting the company’s core values in its physical environment.

A Culinary Conclusion: The Lundberg Cooking Challenge

Our incredibly insightful and fun-filled trip culminated in an exciting culinary challenge. It was a cooking competition that brought out the creativity and competitive spirit among the bloggers. My partner, Rachael, and I collaborated to prepare a delightful pork loin taco bowl, perfectly complemented by a flavorful spinach cilantro rice—a dish that truly showcased the versatility of Lundberg rice. Dana and Nicole crafted innovative wild rice avocado cups, demonstrating healthful and delicious ways to incorporate Lundberg’s distinctive grains. However, the ultimate culinary crowns were bestowed upon Kim and Joanie, whose ingenious candied nut tarts impressed everyone and earned them the well-deserved win. The entire meal, a collaborative effort among passionate food creators, was absolutely delightful and incredibly delicious. There’s something uniquely invigorating about cooking in those expansive, professional-grade commercial kitchens, especially when surrounded by fellow food enthusiasts.

The camaraderie and shared passion for good food were palpable throughout the challenge. I had the pleasure of sharing this unforgettable experience with a fantastic group:
